How to choose a cleaning company in Bristol

Apps, agencies, sole traders and franchises all look similar from the outside. Five questions that tell you which one to trust with a key to your home.

Search for a cleaner in Bristol and you will find booking apps, local agencies, national franchises, and individuals advertising on classified sites. From the outside they look much the same, and the prices are often close. The difference shows up when something goes wrong, or when you are handing someone a key to your home. These are the five questions that separate them.

1. Who is responsible if something goes wrong?

This is the question that matters most. If a cleaner breaks something, gets hurt in your home, or simply does not turn up, who deals with it?

With a proper company, the cleaners are its staff, the work is covered by the company's public liability insurance, and there is an office you can call. With a booking app, you are often contracting directly with a self-employed individual and the platform's role ends at payment. With a classified ad, the responsibility is entirely yours. Ask directly: are your cleaners employed by you, and are you insured? Clean Connection employs its cleaners and carries £2,000,000 of public liability cover.

2. How are the cleaners vetted?

Anyone coming into your home regularly should have been checked before their first visit. Ask what that check involves. A reasonable answer includes proof of identity and right to work, references from previous work that have actually been followed up, and a DBS check where the work warrants it. Ask whether cleaners are trained in-house or simply sent out.

3. What happens when you are not happy?

Every cleaner has an off day. What matters is what the company does about it. Look for a satisfaction guarantee in writing, with a clear timeframe: tell us within a set number of hours and we return to put it right at no charge. Be wary of a company whose only contact method is a chat box with no phone number and no address.

4. How does the pricing work?

Get the pricing structure in writing before you book:

  • Is it an hourly rate or a fixed price, and is there a minimum visit length?
  • Are cleaning products and equipment included, or charged separately?
  • Is there a supplement for the first visit, for travel, or for parking?
  • What are the cancellation terms, and what counts as short notice?

A clear quote with no surprise supplements is a good sign. A rate well below everyone else usually means something is being left out, most often insurance, holiday pay for the cleaner, or the time the job actually takes to do properly.

5. Do you get the same cleaner each time?

For a regular clean, consistency is most of the value. The same cleaner learns your home, your preferences and where things go, and you build the trust that makes key-holding comfortable. A company that sends whoever is free each week is offering a different, lower-trust service, even at the same price.

A few Bristol-specific checks

  • Do they actually cover your area? Ask for a straight yes or no. Ours are on the areas we cover page.
  • Can they park near a terrace with no driveway, and is a permit or a loading window a problem?
  • Do they know hard water? Limescale is the main reason a Bristol bathroom looks tired, and it needs the right product, not just effort.

Red flags

  • Cash only, with no invoice, contract or written terms
  • No specific answer on insurance, or no figure given
  • No fixed business address or company number
  • Pressure to sign a long minimum contract
  • Reviews only on the company's own website, with none anywhere independent

You can see how we answer all of the above on our help and FAQs page, and what customers say on our reviews page. If you want a fixed quote, tell us your postcode and what you need.

Before the first regular visit, agree in writing how the cleaner gets in, where any key is kept, and who to contact if plans change. Sorting access properly on day one prevents almost every problem that comes up later.
